The story is set in the 1830s, when a good portion of California was owned by Russia. Republic It's 1650 in New Amsterdam, and Brom Broeck, a young outspoken newspaper publisher is arrested for printing advanced opinions on the undemocratic rule of Govenor "Peg-Leg" Stuyvesant. Yet she can not but fall in love with Captain Lawrence, right hand to the governor and an apparently incorruptible man.
