At times you find yourself playing a guessing game as to what character type or eccentric each actor will turn up as next.Sims resorts to any number of theatrical devices to tell the tale, including slapstick, vaudeville, mime and a shadow "puppet" show to convey the rambunctious last drinks ritual at the Federal Hotel. Less successful, in my view, is Rodgers's somewhat low-key, seemingly anaesthetised doctor and euthanasia crusader who has dangled the mercy-killing "carrot" to Max and brought him to his promised mortal end at the apparently liberating top end and a world away from his Broken Hill porch.
