An autopsy released a month after her death detailed how the experienced trainer died of blunt force trauma to the head, neck and torso, and drowning.In a statement released on Monday, a spokesperson for SeaWorld said: “Today, the entire SeaWorld family remembers and honors the life of Dawn Brancheau and her passion for protecting all animals, and inspiring the next generation to care for our oceans and its marine animal inhabitants.” After petting the whale on the nose during a show, she turned her back before the orca pounced.He yanked her into the pool and began violently thrashing her around.While some members of staff quickly herded visitors out of the pool area, others rushed to try to free their colleague from the beast’s grip.But sadly, by the time Dawn’s body was retrieved she had already died.Her scalp was found at the bottom of the pool after SeaWorld staff managed to guide Tilikum into an adjoining area.Dawn had studied psychology and animal behaviours at university and was one of SeaWorld’s most celebrated trainers.Former colleagues said the trainer’s bond with Tilikum was strong and based on trust.Dawn had spent 15 years working with sea creatures, many of them deadly.She became a trainer of the killer whales two-years after she started working at Seaworld.Tilikum, also known as Blackfish, was among the largest fish at SeaWorld.The bull orca measured 22.5 feet in length and weighed about 12,500 pounds.He was captured in a net near Iceland in 1983 at just two years old.He spent his first year in captivity living in a tank at a marine zoo in Iceland.After this stint, he was shipped to Sealand of the Pacific, a marine park on Vancouver Island in British Colombia.Here he had to perform in eight shows every day for visitors.He killed a 21-year-old trainer in 1991 at the site shortly before it was closed.After being transferred to SeaWorld he was found to have killed a 27-year-old man who evaded security to ender an orca tank.SeaWorld of Hurt, a campaign group which raises awareness about the realities faced by the captured whales in SeaWorld, calls the US site a “prison”.Activists have called for the tourist attraction to be closed as whales, dolphins and other big fish cannot live in their natural habitat.
