The Ruins. Jeff hears moans coming from outside and goes to see what is going on.
The group cannot call for help since Eric's phone has no signal.
These five, plus a cheerful Greek with no English (but a plentiful supply of tequila), head up a jungle trail to find Mathias's brother…the archaeologists…and the ruins. After they remove the vines she tries to take the knife, claiming that the vines are in her head. Two young American couples (Jeff and Amy along with Eric and Stacy) vacation in Mexico. The group reaches the ruins of a Mayan temple, and are confronted by Mayan villagers with guns and bows. They then realize that the ringing sound was made by the flowers of the vine. [sarcastically] [seeing the Mayans on the ground] The Ruins is a 2008 film based on a novel of the same name by Scott Smith produced by Ben Stiller, and starring Jonathan Tucker and Jena Malone. Overcome with remorse, Stacy begs Amy to kill her, and Jeff kills her as an act of mercy. I love the ending of the book, but if the movie had ended the same way, the audience would have wanted to kill themselves. As Mathias' condition worsens, Jeff In the morning Eric brings Amy and Jeff into the tent and tells Stacy to show them what is on her back. She turns around and exposes her back and the group can see vines underneath her skin. The ruins are covered by an unknown plant that isn't as innocent as they appear to be. [to Amy] The Mayans eventually shoot Jeff with arrows. The group now realizes that the vines are predatory, which is why the Mayans won't let anyone leave. The next morning, Stacy awakens and leaves the tent where the rest of the group is sleeping.
As he touches her back to calm her, she spins around and fatally stabs him in the chest. A Mayan temple. Eric and Jeff are barely able to remove the vines from Stacy but cannot get them off of Mathias. It's in practically every single shot in the film after the characters reach the hill, so it has to look like something that could really be growing there. While the rest try to restrain Stacy, Eric is dragged away by the vines. Jeff makes a plan for Amy to escape.
After Amy's escape, Dimitri's two Greek friends are seen walking through the woods and come up to the temple, looking for him. The quartet decide to tag along with Mathias in the hope of seeing some real Mayan ruins… As Stacy proceeds to drink, the rest of the group watches her as a vine moves under the skin in her forehead, revealing that her fears are true. Mathias tries to explain their purpose, but the … Heinrich left to go see the ruins of the novel’s title and Mathias hasn’t heard from him since. She finds a backpack, which contains a knife. Two young couples are on a lazy Mexican vacation–sun-drenched days, drunken nights, making friends with fellow tourists. [holding business card] Jeff : Kind of like the ones that nobody here wanted to go to, the entire time that we've been here. The vines have also wrapped themselves around Mathias's lower legs and eaten them down to the bone. A Mayan temple. At the top, they find an abandoned camp and a shaft in the center. Plot summary. He then provokes and berates the Mayans, drawing their attention away from Amy. [after the taxi leaves] Mathias : Yeah, some ruins, I think. His last known location is an archaeological dig at a remote Mayan ruin in the jungle. In a small, vine-covered room, the two find the body of the young archaeologist, Heinrich's friend, and a broken phone.
They make friends with a German named Mathias whose brother has gone off into the jungle with some archeologists. They are also joined by Dimitri (Dimitri Baveas), Mathias's friend.
Trapped in the Mexican jungle, a group of friends stumble upon a creeping horror unlike anything they could ever imagine. As she drives through the jungle, she touches her face and realizes that there are vines growing underneath her skin. Amy gets up and runs through the jungle with the Mayans chasing after her. At the pool of their hotel, they make friends with a German tourist, Mathias, and decide to help Mathias look for his brother, Heinrich. Jeff is killed by the Mayan leader with a gunshot to the head.

Jeff walks over to Stacy trying to calm her down as she has a deep gash on her forehead and is slicing up her thigh to get a vine out. The story is based around the discovery of an ancient Mayan Temple. They meet Mathias (Joe Anderson), a German tourist, who is looking for his brother Heinrich. They befriend a German tourist named Mathias, and a trio of Greeks who go by the Spanish nicknames Pablo, Juan… Director Carter Smith told an interviewer, "We shot a bunch of different stuff to see which one would work best with the finished film. Eric also approaches Stacy, trying to calm her down. But it also has to look menacing once you realize what it is capable of doing.
Our final decision was informed by what audiences found the most satisfying after watching a really punishing film. To calm down Stacy, Amy offers her some of the alcohol they used to sterilize her wounds. [Amy knocks Eric's hat off] [holding his cell phone] Eric pours alcohol over her leg to sterilize it and then cuts it to remove the vine. He then proceeds to remove the three-foot-long vine from her spine. He backs away.
