The killer is identified almost instantly because of the signature napkin knot found around the victims throat - the signature of notorious card-playing killer C.J. Despite the identification, the American detective Higgins pleads to the French police not to try to apprehend the perpetrator, because he wants to catch Dabney red-handed if possible. It's also interesting to see the usually mild-mannered Roland "Topper" Young playing against type as the crazy villain. Also fun are some cameos and bit parts by that ol' skinflint Jack Benny (uncredited), as well as George "Superman" Reeves and Jim "Mr. Magoo" Backus. Dabney. "The Great Lover" is a fictional biography of Rupert Brooke, which makes one regards it with some scepticism because she has done extensive research into his life and times, and uses actual quotes from his letters or those of some of his circle but not necessarily in the same context. As Freddie is leaving the ship, he literally bumps into the beautiful young Duchess Alexandria, and isn't as keen on leaving anymore.
