Magda's Eastern European roots allow the film to examine Australia's elephant in the room; immigration. Beresford, who directed Driving Miss Daisy, Crimes of the Heart, and Breaker Morant, movies that portrayed eccentrics inhabiting society's borders, neither sentimentalizes these women's struggles nor makes them paragons of identity politics.

Despite its drawbacks, Ladies in Black is a fun, charismatic tale executed by a talented ensemble clearly delighting in their roles. But despite his very light hand, the film is a multi-faceted portrayal of identity and opportunity, and doesn't ignore the immigrant influences that found their milieu within post-war Australia. The movie is completely light-hearted, marking itself as a beautiful coming-of-age adventure.
Ladies in Black quietly but effectively points out the seldom-stressed positives of immigration and integration, and thus deserves attention far beyond its own native shores. As a light, lovely-looking entertainment, Ladies in Black is a superlative chick flick that celebrates femininity and independence as mutually supportive qualities...the film also champions how Australia was built by a rich mix of cultures.
